Aussie Speak

G’day mate    

When we go to Wooly’s we take the lift down and bring our trolley to get some lollies and other groceries. Sometimes we buy pop/soda in an (al you min e um) can. The weather presenter tells us it may rain so we carry our brolly with us. We make sure we take our camera as well in case we may want to take some snaps of something interesting. On the way we may see a Mum out pushing a pram with her little bub inside with plenty of nappies for changing.  When we get home we organise our groceries in the pantry.

Confectionery is a sweet treat or candy.

If we don’t find anything interesting at the grocery store we may stop and bring home some take away for lunch or just stop at Macca’s (McDonald’s) for a $5 feed. We may even make a booking for dinner and don’t have to worry about hurrying to eat as the table is ours for the whole evening. If it’s cool we wear a jumper (sweater) to ward off the chill. For brekky we may have sausage, breakfast bacon and eggs with toastie or a scone or two along with a cuppa. We haven’t had a go with any prawns on the barbie as we don’t really like seafood. But if we do we will ring you on your mobile (mow bile) and let you know or send a letter by post.

It’s nice to have morning tea after church with biscuits (cookies). One Sunday afternoon we walked downtown and had some ice cream cones, my flavour was maple macadamia and Bob had a two flavour ice cream cone with Mocha Almond Fudge and Old Fashioned Toffee.

Our building is very safe as you need authorised access to enter the building, to go in the lifts to your floor, fitness center, the pool and car park. We have an assigned spot in the car park, but having no car we save money not having to put in petrol. We make sure we wear our thongs (not that kind) with our bathers to go to the pool.  



Here these are known as thongs.

During our picnic supper on Australia Day we had to keep doing the Aussie salute (brushing away the flies), while talking about the footy, tennis and cricket games. We worried some about the king tide after the floods, but no worries mate it didn’t cause any more damage in our area.  We are planning a weekend to go visit Sydney Harbour, I’m sure it will be lovely.

 (These are some of the terms we have heard and/or seen.  My spell checker on my computer wasn’t too happy with my little story! I just love the Australian accent. In the past two days we have had two different people tell us they love our accent. They each didn't think there's was anything special that ours was nicer. We assured them we loved their accents.)



We have heard "mate" but not "bloke" but we did see this.
